4. During Your Stay
All exchange students will get an invitation to our Welcome Meeting that takes place in the week before the lectures start! We will talk about all relevant details of our subject area and (academic) student life. Due to its importance for a successful study start at TUM CIT Informatics, your participation is mandatory.
It is crucial that you will be present in Munich in time, to make the most of your exchange stay with us.
Our Fachschaft (Student Council) has great tips and gives you a tour through the building. Enable the English subtitles via the setting buttons of the videos. Then it's easy to follow, even if there is only a German guide. Youtube Channel of MPI Fachschaft
(1) For signing a confirmation of arrival/stay the following rules at TUM apply:
- Arrival: the day of the first academic activity (e.g. orientation weeks, language courses, information / welcome events)
- Departure: the day of the last academic activity (e.g. end of course, examination, end of thesis); the signature can be done with your last day of academic activity or thereafter (not beforehand).
- Your home university provides you with the correct form sheet. Please request it there.
- TUM Informatics does not sign confirmations before the exact day of your arrival or departure.
(2) Upload your confirmation form in our web form
- web form for confirmations of arrival: https://collab.dvb.bayern/display/TUMsbsin/Confirmation+of+Arrival
- web form for confirmations of stay/departure: https://collab.dvb.bayern/display/TUMsbsin/Confirmation+of+Depature+-+Confirmation+of+Stay
- An extension of stay has to be requested in due time:
- latest by mid-July for an extension for winter semester
- latest by mid-January for summer semester.
Your home university has to agree first and you have to provide us with the confirmation of extension either by your home university coordinator's email directly sent to us or an official letter nominating you for an additional semester.
ERASMUS+ students use the Online Learning Agreement (OLA) to create and negotiate their choice of courses or study program respectively. Please indicate Lena Hengstler (responsible person) and Julia Cyllok (contact person) as your TUM contacts in the OLA platform, but in both cases ALWAYS with student-exchange(at)in.tum.de. Do not use their personal email-addresses!
This is crucial, so we can actually sign your learning agreement. Please follow our advice and the rules provided in the section "how to find courses". When creating you Learning Agreement: (1) Indicate the TUM module codes (e.g. INxxxx) for the component code of each course. (2) Avoid using the TUMonline number, where possible. (3) The study field is in most cases defined by the ISCED Code 061 (or 0619) Information and Communication Technologies.
Please only create your online learning agreement after/from mid-August (for winter semester) or late February (for summer semester), if possible. About 6-8 weeks before the lecture period starts, not only our courses will be published, but the matching for practical courses and seminars will be concluded, too. Then your home university signs the OLA first, thereafter TUM Informatics receives the request to sign your learning agreement. At this point of time your OLA is hopefully correctly filled in and a successful and quick signing of your online learning agreement at TUM Informatics more likely.
Changes to your learning agreement can be done later during the semester (not before the second week of the lecture period) depending on the deadlines and rules by your home university. However please consider TUM's late semester dates and absences/vacations in the lecture free period.
After your arrival and orientation, a wide range of extracurricular activities is open to you. For information on some of the activities arranged on and off campus that may be of interest to you as an exchange student; view Student Life.
Here you can find some comprehensive information on medical care and how to see a doctor or how to go to a hospital in Germany on any day during the week. The website (switch to English on the top right) gives step by step information in English, what to consider and how to prepare.
The registration for exams in winter semester starts in mid-November until January 15. During summer semester you register for exams from the beginning of May until June 30. If you don't register in time, credits will not appear on your transcript. It is a very strict deadline, so keep the deadlines in mind. The Academic Programs Office as well as the Team International Affairs will send reminders by email.
In case you have issues with registering, the guideline for exchange students gives incomings a pathway how to register for an exam. Have a look there first! In addition, the TUM step-by-step guideline explains, how to register for exams in TUMonline and gives you all the necessary information.
Students with special needs requiring additional time for the examination or specific access arrangements have to request an accommodation before the registration for exams ends. The earlier you inform student-exchange(at)in.tum.de the better. Be aware that you have to submit a confirmation by your home university and/or a medical attestation.
For further questions with regard to exams please contact student-exchange(at)in.tum.de in due time.
Resits/Retakes at TUM Informatics are offered for some but not all lectures. Resits take place in late September/October (registration in September) for summer semester, and late March/April for winter semester (registration in March). Students enrolled at TUM during the current semester can take the resits of the upcoming retake-period. For retake exams offered a semester or year later, students would have to re-enroll. Please contact student-exchange(at)in.tum.de for advice in that case. For resits/retakes at other TUM Schools/Departments different rules apply, please check there.
As an exchange student in Germany, you may choose to support yourself during your studies by finding a job. Many students at TUM Informatics work part-time during their studies, and our exchange students are generally very successful in finding good jobs. Informatics experts have strong job prospects in Munich and the surrounding areas – and the extra income can help you cover your living costs.
Depending on the type of visa you hold and the length of your program, you will be eligible to work in the private sector for a limited amount of time while you are a student at TUM Informatics. You may work during the school year or during breaks. Full-time work is limited to a maximum of 120 days/year or part-time work for 240 days/year. For additional information, visit the Career Guidance and International Café. An information session is offered for international students at the International Café every semester.
Master’s Programs
It may be possible to transfer the credits you earn during your exchange period into a full degree program. After completing your undergraduate (bachelor’s) degree program at your home university, you can apply directly to the TUM Informatics master's program in a wide range of specializations. Your chances of being admitted into our master’s program and offered scholarships will be better if you have already successfully studied here during your exchange! Contact the academic advising servicesrepresentatives for more information.
