The Independent Studies form the core of the elite study program TopMath. In intensive independent study in their first, second and, if desired, third TopMath semester, the students work on a mathematical problem corresponding to their thematic interests, accompanied and guided by their mentor.
The result of the mandatory Independent Studies is presented at the end of the second semester, amongst others in a talk open to a general audience of university members.
Independent Studies in the winter term 2020/21
This term we will hear talks by Helge Frerichs, Ben Spies, and Giulio Zucal.
The three students work in different areas of mathematics: Ben Spies, mentee of Prof. Rudi Zagst, works on GARCH models and is part of the Mathematical Finance working group. Helge Frerichs conducts research in the field of Differential Geometry, his mentor is Prof. Bernhard Hanke from the University of Augsburg. Giulio Zucal is part of the working group Dynamics and mentee of Prof. Christian Kühn.
The talks, which take place from March to April, are based on their areas of research.
