ISMAR is the leading international conference for augmented reality (AR), mixed reality (MR) and virtual reality (VR). It brings together the world's leading researchers from both academia and industry and provides a comprehensive insight into the advances in these three areas.
Significant impact in the field of augmented reality
Gudrun Klinker and Nassir Navab independently received the ISMAR 2024 Career Impact Award at this year's conference in Seattle from October 21-25. The award recognizes individuals whose lifelong research has significantly impacted the field of mixed, augmented and virtual reality.
Traditionally, the ISMAR Career Impact Award is presented to one person each year. This year’s decision to have two individual awards, both going to the TUM School of Computation, Information and Technology, underlines the outstanding research and teaching in the field of augmented reality in the Department of Computer Science at TUM.
Research on augmented reality in medicine and everyday life
Nassir Navab has held the Chair of Computer Applications in Medicine at TUM since 2003. His research focuses on technologies that help to improve the quality of medical interventions. Navab is a Member of Academia Europaea and received the prestigious MICCAI Enduring Impact Award in 2021. He is an IEEE Fellow, ELLIS Fellow, Fellow of International Academy of Medical and Biological Engineering (IAMBE), and Fellow of Asia-Pacific Artificial Intelligence Association (AAIA). As of October 31, 2024, his papers have received over 83500 citations and hold an h-index of 124.
Gudrun Johanna Klinker is TUM Emerita of Excellence and held the Professorship of Augmented Reality at TUM from May 2000 to March 2024. Her research focuses on the combination of augmented reality with wearable and ubiquitous computing, as well as serious games. In 2010, she received the Robert Sauer Prize of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities and in 2022 the IEEE VR Lifetime Achievement Award. Since then, she has been a member of the Virtual Reality Academy of the IEEE Visualization and Graphics Technical Community (VGTC).
