With the VLDB Early Career Research Contribution Award, it has been supporting researchers since 2013 who have demonstrated research impact through a specific technical contribution of high significance since the completion of their doctoral thesis. The award carries a cash prize of USD 2000.

Prof. Viktor Leis receives the award for his significant and impactful contributions to high-performance database systems, particularly through his LeanStore project. LeanStore is a high-performance storage engine for modern hardware.
Viktor Leis holds the Chair of Decentralized Information Systems and Data Management at the TUM School of Computation, Information and Technology. He is the second winner of the Early Career Research Contribution Award of the VLDB at TUM. The first recipient was Thomas Neumann, Professor of Database Systems at the TUM School of Computation, Information and Technology.
