Vacation Seminar of the Hurwitz Society

Each fall, the Hurwitz Society hosts a vacation seminar for students in their fourth semester and above. Here, students get to know their lecturers and other members of the department in a relaxed atmosphere.

The vacation seminar will take place as a block event at the TUM Akademiezentrum Raitenhaslach from 8 to 12 September 2024 (Monday to Friday) and is recognized as a seminar in the course of study.

Risikomaße und Entscheidungstheorie unter Unsicherheit

In vielen ökonomischen Fragestellungen spielen Entscheidungen und Präferenzen von Individuen eine wichtige Rolle, zum Beispiel beim Abwägen von Chancen und Risiken beim Investieren. Während Entscheidungen in der Regel durch subjektive Aspekte wie unterschiedliche Einstellungen gegenüber Risiken geprägt sind, verhalten sich viele Individuen nichtsdestotrotz bis zu einem gewissen Grad rational. Die Entscheidungstheorie untersucht, wie das Verhalten von rationalen Individuen formalisiert und auf einfache Axiome zurückgeführt werden kann.

Ähnliche Problemstellungen findet man im Risikomanagement, wenn unterschiedliche Risiken gemessen und ein monetärer Gegenwert bestimmt werden muss. Da es auch hier darum geht, Chancen und Risiken unsicherer zukünftiger Entwicklungen zu bewerten, ist es nicht verwunderlich, dass Risikomaße durch ein ähnliches Axiomensystem formalisiert werden können.

Im Rahmen des Seminars besprechen wir die Grundlagen beider Fachgebiete und untersuchen deren Zusammenhänge. Zur Anwendung kommen dabei verschiedene mathematische Methoden, insbesondere aus der Ordnungstheorie, der Wahrscheinlichkeitstheorie und der Funktionalanalysis.

Schedule

The seminar is divided into two topics that are covered in parallel. You decide in advance which of the two you would like to attend. Together with all participants, you can expect

  • more lectures on mathematical research topics,
  • a "fireside chat" in the evening with an external talk "from professional life" on what you can expect after your studies, 
  • as well as an excursion and 
  • the final round.

In addition, there will of course also be the opportunity to talk about mathematical and non-mathematical topics outside the lectures.

Financial Support

The costs for the seminar, accommodation and meals (except dinner) are completely covered. A not insignificant part of the costs is borne by the Hurwitz Society. An equally large contribution will also be made from student grant funds since this is an extraordinary event for the improvement of teaching.

Travel to and from the seminar is to be organized and financed by the participants themselves. The seminar will take place at the TUM Akademiezentrum Raitenhaslach with overnight accommodation in Burghausen, about 5 kilometers away.

The TUM School of Computation, Information and Technology bids farewell to its doctoral and habilitation graduates - with a ceremony followed by a get-together with free food and drinks. The graduation ceremony will take place on February 28, 2025, in Garching.
