When deciding, you should take the following aspects into account:
- exchange program (Erasmus+, TUMexchange, Double Degree, self-organized)
- country, university, higher education system
- costs, scholarships
- language skills, language courses ans language tests
Exchange Programs
The simplest way to spend one or two semesters abroad is for sure a stay abroad through the exchange programs offered by TUM. Already established contacts make administrative steps, in most of the cases, much easier. The respective frame of the exchange program of course defines the country and the host university affecting the choice of the university abroad. However, TUM offers its students a large number of exchange opportunities (TUM CIT Informatics has over 90 partner universities).
If TUM's exchange programs don't offer the right contacts to a university or country for you, it is also possible to organize a stay at a university abroad by yourself. In this case, you have to overcome the administrative obstacles (acceptance, enrollment, etc.) on your own. The first contact should be the host university, i.e. the respective department for subject-related questions and the international office for administrative questions. In contrast to some exchange programs, mostly you have to take a language test or submit a certificate that confirms your sufficient language skills. Thanks to external scholarship providers, it is possible to fund a semester or even a year abroad. Further information on this option, you can find here.
Decisive are, in particular, your personal expectations for a stay at a university abroad.
- Do I want to improve my language skills?
- Do I want to study at a particularly prestigious university?
- Do I want to attend special courses or find an academic complement to TUM courses?
- Or do I just want to broaden my horizon?
Already existing language skills in the country's official language are not always decisive, especially in countries whose universities teach in English (e.g. Scandinavia, Turkey). Very helpful when deciding where to go are also the course offers at different host universities. Do the offered courses help you to learn more about your specific interests or to broaden your focus? Information on education systems in single countries is provided by the DAAD.
The right point of time to go abroad depends on the repective degree program, your individual study progress and your personal objectives. If you want to go abroad for primarily academic-scientific reasons and would like to have recognized entire periods of study, then the best time for a stay abroad is, from experience, at the earliest after having completed the first four Bachelor's semsters, which often is even a prerequisite for an acceptance at the university abroad. Our Double Degree Programs in Master Informatics represent also a good option for suitable students.
The website mobility window helps you planning and integrating your stay abroad with a possible study progress plan including a stay abroad for every degree program in our subject area.
If you know a language other than English or are willing to learn another language the offer of countries and universities to chose from is much bigger and your chances of getting accepted increase significantly. Freshen up in time your French or Spanish you learned at school or learn a completely new language like Japanese or Portugese. TUM's language center offers many language courses for different levels.
