For further information, please see the Handout on Theses and Dissertations.
Selecting a suitable topic for your bachelor's thesis may take several weeks or months. So, be sure you allot enough time for the selection process and keep the following tips in mind_
Some bachelor's thesis topics are published on the following websites:
- Administration portal of CIT (Koinon): Theses → Topics on Offer
- Thesis Management System
- Websites of academic units/professorships
Most theses are currently assigned without a call for applications. To find a thesis topic, we recommend that you apply directly to the relevant academic unit/professorship.
The list of Expert Examiners provides an overview of all teaching staff in academic units and professorships authorized to supervise final theses in the Bachelor's Degree Program Electrical and Computer Engineering.
Contact selected academic units/professorships. Ideally, you should already have completed modules and/or the Engineering Practice at this academic unit/professorship. This highlights that you already have some technical expertise in the research area of the academic unit/professorship. Demonstrate your interest in the research area of the respective academic unit/professorship. For example, refer to the modules you have attended or the list of publications.
Write targeted emails and address them directly to one specific person. If it is not clear from the website of the academic unit/professorship who the correct point of contact is, call or email the respective front office and find out beforehand. If you do not get a response to an email, follow up after one or two weeks.
Alternatively, you can chat with professors about a potential bachelor's thesis before or after a class.
If you have not found a topic or supervisor for your bachelor's thesis after about three months of extensive efforts, please contact Mr. Ahrens and Mr. Naunheimer, the Departmental Academic Advisors for the Bachelor's Degree Program Electrical and Computer Engineering: academic-advising-ece.asa@xcit.tum.de
The Bachelor's Examination Board for the program appoints the expert examiners. These individuals are authorized to supervise bachelor's theses in the Bachelor's Degree Program Electrical and Computer Engineering. Please refer to the List of Expert Examiners to see all potential supervisors.
Since 15 January 2024, all modalities of the thesis module at the TUM CIT are managed using the CIT portal (Koinon).
Once you have found a topic and a supervisor for your thesis, the supervisor will register you for the thesis. You will receive an automated email from the CIT portal asking you to confirm your thesis registration. You must first be registered by the supervisor before the ASA can check that the admission requirements have been met. If so,you will automatically receive an email from the CIT portal confirming your official and binding registration for the thesis.
Registration by email undertaken before 15 January 2024 remains valid. They will not be transferred to the CIT portal. Students submit their thesis to the supervising academic unit/professorship and hold their final presentation there. After completion of the bachelor's thesis the supervisor records the grade to bsei.asa@xcit.tum.de.
Features for students in the CIT portal (Koinon):
- Use your seven-digit TUM ID to log in to the CIT portal.
- This will give you an overview of your thesis module.
- If necessary, you can apply for an extension.
- To submit the bachelor's thesis, upload it to the portal. Inform your supervisor that you have submitted your thesis and set a date for your final presentation.
- The recording of grades is done by the supervisor via the CIT portal. ASA staff will then transfer it to TUMonline.
Important information before registering your thesis:
- Please make sure you meet the requirements for starting your bachelor's thesis (at least 120 ECTS, including passing of the GOP). Only then can the ASA confirm the registration.
- During a semester on leave, you cannot register for or submit a final thesis – the exception to this rule is a second attempt.
If you have any questions regarding the registration of your bachelor's thesis, please feel free to send an e-mail to bsei.asa@xcit.tum.de.
Your bachelor's thesis is worth 12 ECTS. This corresponds to 360 hours of work, which you can complete within 9 weeks on a full-time basis or within a maximum of 20 weeks on a part-time basis.
The timeframe for working on the thesis from the assigment of the topic to the submission of the written thesis must not exceed 20 weeks. The date of the final presentation is to be set individually for each student in consultation with their supervisor.
Scientific Writing and Presentation is a 90-minute event that is optional and can be attended in preparation for your bachelor's thesis. The aim of the session is to give students the best possible preparation for planning, writing, and presenting their bachelor's thesis.
The event is offered twice during the lecture period – usually to be attended in person with live streaming. Interested students can register for the event in TUMonline under the module “EI1000 Bachelor's Thesis” and will then have access to the Moodle documents.
The next sessions will take place on:
- Monday, April 27, 2026, from 16:45 to 18:15 in Room N0507
- Thursday, July 9, 2026, from 16:45 to 18:15 in Room N0507
Please inquire with your supervising academic unit or your supervisor to see if they provide a template for the written paper.
If no template is provided, you can create your own, for example using TUM Sharelatex. You will find a selection of templates there, some of which are provided directly by academic units. An alternative is the TUM Template for Scientific Papers (available for Word and LaTeX).
You may also write your bachelor's thesis in collaboration with an external institution. When doing so, please note the Instructions for Writing a Thesis in Collaboration With External Institutions.
The master’s thesis should be the last module of the program. To be eligible for writing the master's thesis, you must have earned 90 ECTS.
The ASA checks the admission requirements as part of the registration process in the CIT portal.
For further information, please see the Handout on Theses and Dissertations.
Selecting a suitable topic for your master's thesis may take several weeks or months. So, be sure you allot enough time for the selection process.
You may complete your master’s thesis either at an academic unit/a professorship or in collaboration with an external institution. In either case, you must have a faculty member authorized to supervise theses who will oversee your thesis. An overview of all departments currently authorized to supervise theses in the Master’s program in Electrical and Computer Engineering can be found in the list of expert examiners.
Please note the following tips:
Some master's thesis topics are published on the following websites:

Most theses are currently assigned without a call for applications. Teilweise veröffentlichen Lehrstühle / Professuren Ihre Themen auch in Schaukästen vor Ort.
When applying for a position at an academic unit/a professorship, we recommend contacting the professor or relevant academic staff directly. If you are taking a course offered by the relevant academic unit/professorship, it is a good idea to speak with the instructors directly at the end of the class.
Alternatively, you can also contact specific academic units or professorships via email. If possible, you should highlight any modules you have already taken and/or research experience you have gained at that academic unit/professorship to demonstrate your academic connection to the research field. In addition, you should clearly articulate your interest in the specific research area—for example, by referring to modules you have taken or relevant publications from the academic unit/professorship.
Write targeted emails and address them directly to one specific person. If it is not clear from the website of the academic unit/professorship who the correct point of contact is, call or email the respective front office and find out beforehand.

Your master's thesis is worth 30 ECTS. This corresponds to 24 hours of work on a full-time basis (6 months). The entire time allowed for the master’s thesis includes its submission and the final presentation.
After registration and receiving confirmation from the ASA, you will find the submission deadline in both the confirmation email and in the CIT portal.
The date of the final presentation is to be set individually for each student in consultation with their supervisor. If the date cannot be arranged within the time allowed for the master’s thesis, it should be arranged in a timely manner.
Information on the extension of the period for working on the thesis
An extension is only possible in cases of hardship, i.e., in the event of delays that you have not caused yourself. Specific reasons and documentation must be presented. A request for extension must generally be submitted at least two weeks before the period for working on the thesis ends or as soon as it becomes clear that there will be a delay.
Requests are to be submitted via the CIT portal. You can also upload your supporting documentation there. If a request for extension is based on “other reasons", the academic unit must write a detailed explanation in the CIT portal.
Only when all documentation has been submitted can the request be reviewed by the Master's Examination Board and a decision regarding a possible extension can be made. The Master's Examination Board is not compelled to accept internal agreements regarding an extension made by academic units.
Please inquire with your supervising academic unit or your supervisor to see if they provide a template for the written paper.
Should no template be available, you can prepare your own or use TUM’s Sample Template for academic papers (available in Word and LaTEX).
You may also write your master's thesis in collaboration with an external institution. It is crucial that you follow the following instructions:
External institutions and companies publish topics and projects which, according to their call for applications, are suitable for a master's thesis. Please note that setting a topic for the master’s thesis and its assessment is always and exclusively the responsibility of an institution of higher education and the expert examiners of the respective degree program. An expert examiner of the program is required for the registration, realization and assessment of all master’s theses.
Students should not assume that they will be able to obtain suitable academic supervision by an expert examiner from a TUM degree program for their preferred topic when writing their master’s thesis in collaboration with an external institution. This applies especially where students have already agreed to contractual obligations with an external institution or have already begun working on a master’s thesis without registering their thesis beforehand. If no expert examiner from the degree program is willing to supervise the proposed topic, another topic must be chosen with a cooperation partner or one of the topics offered by the academic units/professorships of Electrical and Computer Engineering at TUM must be selected.
As a rule, expert examiners from a department do not sign confidentiality agreements related to the written thesis or the final presentation. Where confidentiality is concerned, we therefore recommend that you enter into a written agreement with the external institution in order to be allowed to submit a master's thesis or give a final presentation as part of the Master's Thesis module. TUM/the degree program does not offer any legal advice on contracts or agreements between students and external institutions.
The copyright of the master’s thesis remains with the student unless a student forfeits this right to another person contractually.
Please note that the oral presentation of the master’s thesis is always open to the university community, regardless of any contractual agreements.
Because there are several contact persons involved (contacts and co-supervisors at an external institution and the expert examiner from the degree program), it is especially important for potential conflicts to be clarified directly with the respective expert examiner for the program early on and for a work schedule to be agreed upon with intermediary goals and meetings.
When students write a thesis in cooperation with an industry partner or another research-related institution, they often have to sign a student employment contract with remuneration. Be aware that this means you will have to do more work beyond your master’s thesis (full-time work).
Should you notice, while working at this external institution, that you are doing work that is not related to the thesis or is not covered by a student employment contract, you should inform your supervisor at the external institution without delay. If the problem does not get resolved, please contact your supervisor at TUM and request a meeting with everyone involved.
When registering your master's thesis, you confirm that you have been made aware of possible difficulties associated with writing it in collaboration with an external institution.
Process from recording of grades to issuing of degree certificate:
Grades are recorded via entry and transfer in the CIT portal. Within one week, the recorded grades will be transferred to TUMonline. Transfers from TUMonline into the Final Examination System (Abschlussprüfungssystem-APV tool) are usually done on the next day. This is an automated process that cannot be controlled by the ASA team.
Please note: If TUMonline fails to include all credits in the calculation and 120 ECTS are not displayed, the data will not be transferred the next day. If this is the case, please contact us by email so that we can allocate your data correctly and you receive your graduation documents without delay.
As soon as you appear in the Final Examination System, you will get a first info email asking you to check the current data. Once you have replied to this email or the specified deadline has passed, you will receive a second email. It provides you with all the information you need to pick up your degree certificate. Please refrain from contacting the TUM Graduation Office and Academic Records before the Final Examination System generates the emails mentioned above.
After you have completed the required achievements and submitted your thesis, you will graduate with a Master of Science (M.Sc.). Now you are all set to launch your career. Tips and tricks on your graduation and the next steps can be found under Graduation.
